Biographical Note
Of Glasgow, where he studied at the University before becoming a successful merchant. Sometime after 1715 he bought an estate at Barrowfield to the east of Glasgow, where he built a house. He was rector of Glasgow University 1731-3 and 1742-43.
Books
Orr used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 22413); the extent and disposition of his library are not known. In 1730 he gave Glasgow University £500, stipulating that the interest was to be used to buy books for the library.
