Luke RUGELEY or RIDGELEY 1617-1696

Biographical Note

Son of Thomas Rugeley (ca.1576-1656), of London, physician. BA Christ's College, Cambridge 1635, MA 1638, MD 1646. He developed a successful medical practice in London, becoming a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1653.

Books

Rugeley inherited books from his father. His library was auctioned in London 9.2.1697 (2426 lots, plus an appendix of 301 lots, i.e. 2727 in all, analysed by Walker, see below); over 50 of his books were acquired by Hans Sloane.

Characteristic Markings

Many of Rugeley's books, acquired by Sloane, are extensively annotated in a mid 17th century hand, probably German or Dutch, not yet identified.
