Biographical Note
Born at Scruton, Yorkshire, son of Christopher Gale. BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1659, fellow 1659, MA 1662, tutor 1663, Regius Professor of Greek 1672, BD and DD 1675. Vicar of Barrington, Cambridgeshire 1667, high master of St Paul's School 1672. Fellow of the Royal Society 1677, secretary 1679; Dean of York 1697. He published numerous historical, classical and antiquarian works.
Books
A list of books belonging to Gale, ca.1700, is in BL Sloane ms 203, fos.266-8. He gave oriental manuscripts to Trinity College, Cambridge. His ODNB entry refers to his "vast library"; most of it passed to his eldest son Roger (d.1744), who gave their joint manuscript collections to Trinity. Gale is listed in Edward Bernard's Catalogi manuscriptorum, 1697, as owning 491 manuscripts.
