Timothy GODWIN or GOODWIN or GOODWYN ca.1670-1729
Biographical Note
Born in Norwich. After initially being educated at a dissenting academy he went to the University of Utrecht in 1692 to study medicine, but decided to enter the Church and moved to St Edmund Hall, Oxford where he graduated MA in 1697. Chaplain to Charles Talbot, Duke of Shrewsbury, who appointed him rector of Heythorpe, Oxfordshire. He became archdeacon of Oxford in 1704 and in 1713 moved with Talbot to Ireland where he was made Bishop of Kilmore in 1715, and Archbishop of Cashel in 1727. A number of his sermons were published, and a biography of Edward Stillingfleet has been attributed to him.
Books
Godwin used an engraved armorial bookplate, made at the end of his life when he was Archbishop (Franks 12204). The extent and disposition of his library is not known.
