Simon BROWNE or BROWN ca.1680-1732

Biographical Note

Born at Shepton Mallet, Somerset, where he was first educated by a local nonconformist minister before moving to a dissenting academy run by John Moore at Bridgwater. He began preaching himself ca.1700 and was a minister at Portsmouth before moving to London, as minster to the congregation at Old Jewry. He was popular there, but in 1723 he had some kind of breakdown or personal crisis and decided to give up the ministry. He returned to Shepton Mallet where he wrote a number of doctrinal and didactic works, most of which remained unpublished.

Books

Browne's library was sold by retail sale and auction in London over two sessions, beginning 27 July and 7 December 1726. No catalogue survives, but the sales were advertised in the Daily Post.
