Thomas CAWTON 1642-1677
Biographical Note
Born at Wivenhoe, Essex, son of Thomas Cawton, vicar there. The family moved to the Netherlands in 1651, and Cawton matriculated at the University of Utrecht in 1657, having already been taught Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and Arabic. BA Merton College, Oxford 1661; as a nonconformist, he became chaplain to Sir Anthony Irby, later to Lady Anne Armine. Licensed to preach in Westminster, 1672. Although noted for his skill and learning in oriental languages, he published little.
Books
Cawton's library was auctioned in London, 29.11.1680, as part of a joint sale with the books of Henry Stubb and 2 others. The sale catalogue runs to over 13,000 lots but does not distinguish which books came from which source.
