Robert BRUCE, 1st Earl of Ailesbury 1626-1685
Biographical Note
Born at St Bartholomew-the-Less, London, son of Thomas Bruce. Lord lieutenant of Huntingdonshire in 1681; of Cambridgeshire 1685. Appointed Lord Chamberlain of the household in 1685.
Books
Noted as a collector of manuscripts and antiquities. Library auctioned in London, 19.5.1690 (1275 lots). His will has no explicit mention of books; they would have been part of the residue of his estate, goods and chattels left to his wife, to dispose of amongst their children as she thought fit.
