Samuel BERESFORD d.1697

Biographical Note

Born at Shrewsbury. BA Queens' College, Cambridge 1652, MA 1655. Vicar of Aston, Warwickshire 1656, ejected 1662. He spent most of the following decades in Shropshire, variously preaching and teaching, and "reckoned one of the most accurate, and at the same time most heavenly preachers in all those parts" (Calamy); he was licensed to preach, as a presbyterian, in 1672.

Books

Beresford had no children, and left much of his estate (owning various property in Shropshire) to his wife Elizabeth. In his will, he left to his friend Joshua Simonds "the London Annotations upon the whole Bible in two volumes in English", and to his wife "all such other English authors or books as she shall please ... from among my study of books". Otherwise, all the rest of his books were to be sold, with half the proceeds given to Sarah Hill, wife of John Hill of Shifnal, tallow chandler, and the other half given to the poor of his native parish of St Alkmund's, Shrewsbury.

Characteristic Markings

None of Beresford's books have been identified.
