John MANNERS, 1st Duke of Rutland 1638-1711

Biographical Note

Born at Boughton, Northamptonshire; 3rd son of Sir John Manners (1604-1679) of Haddon Hall, Derbyshire. MP for Leicestershire from 1661 to 1679; lord lieutenant of Leicestershire and recorder of Grantham in 1677. He was made Duke of Rutland in 1703. Father of John Manners, Lord Roos.

Characteristic Markings

Manners used engraved armorial bookplates (Franks 19636-7); the extent and disposition of his library is not known.
