Biographical Note

Born ca.1682, 2nd but 1st surviving son of Hans Willem Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland, by Anne Villiers, daughter of Sir Edward Villiers of Richmond, Surrey, Knight Marshal of the Household, sister of Edward Villiers, 1st Earl of Jersey.  Travelled abroad (Italy, Germany) 1701–1703.  Married 9 June 1704, Lady Elizabeth Wriothesley (d. 1733), daughter and coheiress of Wriothesley Baptist Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough.

Styled Viscount Woodstock 1689–1709;  succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Portland 23 November 1709; created Duke of Portland 6 July 1716.

Freeman, Southampton 1705.

Captain and Brevet Colonel, 1st Life Guards, 1710–13; Lord of Bedchamber 1717–26; Governor and Vice-Admiral of Jamaica 1721–1723. Member of Parliament for Southampton 1705-1708. Member of Parliament for Hampshire 1708-1709.
