Thomas ANTROBUS 1586-1622

Armorial stamp of Thomas Antrobus (British Armorial Bindings)

Biographical Note

Son of Thomas Antrobus (d.1611) of Knutsford, Cheshire, one of the Six Clerks in Chancery, who bought Heath House, near Petersfield, Hampshire as the family seat. BA Brasenose College, Oxford 1603, entered Lincoln’s Inn in 1604; little else is known about him before his death aged 36.

Books

A small number of late 16th and early 17th century books survive with an armorial Antrobus stamp, thought likely to have been made for this Thomas (the latest known imprint is 1616). His father gave a small number of books to Lincoln’s Inn in 1605 and 1609, which have his arms painted inside as well as a donation inscription. In his will, the younger Thomas directed that all his books should go to his cousin Robert Antrobus, except for ten books for his daughter Elizabeth, "such as she shall choose and best like of". Examples: Bodleian Douce V.242, Douce I.122; Cambridge UL Syn.3.61.5; Senate House Library [G.L.]1616.

Characteristic Markings

Apart from the armorial stamp, surviving books do not generally have Antrobus inscriptions.
