Humphrey SAUNDERS 1605/6-1670

Biographical Note

Born at Payhembury, Devon, son of Laurence Saunders. BA Oriel College, Oxford 1626, MA 1628. Rector of Holsworthy, Devon 1632. Member of the Devon Association 1655, moderator of the Exeter Assembly 1658; his evangelical sympathies led him to publish An anti-diatribe, or the apologie of some ministers and godly people (1655), in support of administering communion only to those fit to receive it, and his refusal to administer the sacrament to some gentry families elicited their enmity. He was ejected in 1662, and remained in Devon as an independent minister, “living peaceably”.
