Timothy PULLER 1638-1693
Biographical Note
Son of Isaac Puller of Hertford, MP for Hertford during the Interregnum. BA Jesus College, Cambridge 1657, MA 1660, BD 1667, DD 1673; fellow of Jesus, 1658-73. Admitted at Gray’s Inn 1658, but did not proceed to a legal career. Ordained priest 1664; Rector of Sacombe, Hertfordshire 1671, of St Mary-le-Bow, London 1679. author of The moderation of the Church of England (1679), opposing the extension of further concessions to dissenters.
Books
Puller’s will, with extensive instructions regarding the disposition of money and property, has no mention of books; all his goods and chattels were left to his wife Alice. His library was auctioned in London by Edward Millington, 10 December 1695, along with a quantity of French, Italian and Spanish books from other sources. The catalogue lists 2241 lots, divided between Latin books (648), English (528), French (520), Italian (324) and Spanish (203), not further subdivided by subject. It is not clear how much of this was Puller’s; presumably the bulk of the Latin and English material, but perhaps none of the books in continental vernacular languages.
Characteristic Markings
None of Puller’s books have been identified.
