John PRESTWICH 1607/8-1679

Biographical Note

Born in Manchester. Fellow of All Souls, Oxford from 1649 until his death.

Books

Prestwich gave money for the establishment of a town library in Manchester during his lifetime, and bequeathed “all my folios quartos and larger octavos bound up either in leather or parchment” to Manchester. His library was initially set up in the Jesus Chapel of the collegiate church there, but later in the 17th century was subsumed into Chetham's Library. No records of the books given by Prestwich survive.
