====Biographical Note====
The second son of [[family::James Carmichael]], second Earl of Hyndford (1638-1710). 
Became a [[occupation::lawyer|member of the Faculty of Advocates]] 31 January 1695 and was appointed King's Solicitor 1 April 1701. He was [[occupation::member of Parliament|M.P.]] for Lanark 1702-1707, and an extraordinary [[occupation::director of the Bank of Scotland]].
