====Biographical Note====

Son of Sir Richard Shuttleworth MP of [[location::Gawthorpe, Lancashire|Gawthorpe Hall]] and [[location::Forcett, Yorkshire| Forcett Hall, Yorkshire]] and [[family::Katherine Clerke]]. He  undertook a Grand Tour of [[location::France]] and [[location::Italy]]  in the early 1700s. MP for Lancashire 1705-49, and ‘Father’ of the Commons in his final year.  Married [[family::Emma Cole]].

The nature and the extent of his library have not been established. His will makes no specific reference to books, which would have been inherited by his eldest surviving son, [[family:: James Shuttleworth|James]].
====Characteristic Markings====

He had an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1707: Franks 26882; *242 (another impression).
