====Biographical Note====
Born in [[place of birth::Shropshire]], father unknown.  BA [[education::Christ Church, Oxford]] 1584, MA [[education::Brasenose College, Oxford]] 1591.  Between these dates he spent time in [[location::France]] as [[occupation::secretary]] to the [[occupation::mathematician]] [[associates::François Viète]]. [[occupation::rector|Rector]] of [[location::Salwarpe, Worcestershire]] 1608-22, of [[location::Liddington, Wiltshire]] 1622, although he resided mainly at [[organisations::Sion College]] in [[location::London]] throughout this time.  Torporley is noted as a [[occupation::mathematician]], who designed sundials and calendars as well as publishing a work on spherical trigonometry, ''Diclides coelometricae'', ([[date of publication::1602]]).

====Books==== 
Via his nuncupative will, Torporley [[bequest::bequeathed]] all his [[subject::mathematics|mathematical]] and other books, astronomical instruments, notes, [[subject::cartography|maps]] and a brass clock to [[beneficiary::Sion College]].  This amounted to ca.215 printed books and 8 [[format::manuscript|manuscripts]]; he also [[bequest::gave]] a small number of [[format::manuscript|manuscripts]] in the years shortly before his death.
