====Biographical Note====
Born in [[location::Dumfriesshire]], he studied classics at the [[education::university of Edinburgh]]. He was [[occupation::rector]] at Dumfries Grammar School between 1801 and 1806, before teaching classics at [[location::Edinburgh]] High School. In 1820 he became rector of the latter, and in 1821 was elected a Fellow of the [[organisations::Royal Society of Edinburgh]].

His library was sold at auction by [[auctioneer::Mr T. Chapman]] at [[location of auction::Edinburgh]] on [[date of auction::Monday, January 20, 1868]], comprising of lots 616-1041, mostly of books printed in the nineteenth-century. A copy of the catalogue survives at the NLS (X.44.g.8(3)).
