====Biographical Note====
Lady Mary Hamilton (Campbell) Ruthven was born in 1789. She married [[family::James, 7th Lord Ruthven of Freeland]], in 1813. She was widowed in 1853 and passed away in 1885.

Lady Ruthven's library was sold at auction by [[associates::Mr. Dowell]] of [[location::Edinburgh]] in 1885. The auction consisted of 631 lots (351 octavos, 143 quarto, 69 folios, and 68 miscellaneous volumes) comprised of mostly 18th- and 19th-century books, although some 16th- and 17th-century books can be found. Subjects include [[subject::maps]], [[subject::art]], [[subject::history]], [[subject::theology]], [[subject::pamphlets]], [[subject::music]], and [[subject::classics]], with books printed for the [[organisations::Maitland]] and [[organisations::Bannatyne]] clubs.
