====Biographical Note====
Lapthorne was a [[occupation::lawyer]] at [[organisations::New Inn]], and the London agent of [[associates::Richard Coffin]], who tasked him with buying books. Their correspondence, in the Devon archive, is a source of information on the book trade in the late seventeenth century.

Lapthorne's "entire collection" of books was sold by [[retail sale::retail sale]] in [[location of sale::London]] from [[date of sale::22 March 1727]]. The sale was advertised in the ''Craftsman'', the ''Daily Post'' and the ''Daily Journal''.
