====Biographical Note====
Son of [[family::John Scattergood]] of [[location::Chaddesdon, Derbyshire]], [[occupation::attorney]]. BA [[education::Trinity College, Cambridge]] 1633, MA 1636, [[occupation::chaplain]] 1637-40, [[occupation::tutor]] 1640, DD 1662. [[occupation::rector|Rector]] of [[location::Winwick, Northamptonshire]] and [[occupation::prebendary]] of [[organisations::Lincoln Cathedral|Lincoln]] 1641, and [[organisations::Lichfield Cathedral|Lichfield]] 1666. He published sermons and doctrinal works, and was involved in biblical editing, and in producing the 9-volume ''Critici sacri'' (1660), published to accompany Walton's Polyglot Bible.

====Books====
Scattergood acted as [[occupation::librarian]] to [[crossreference::John Williams 1582-1650|John Williams]] while he was [[occupation::bishop|Bishop]] of [[diocese::Lincoln]]. He bequeathed his library to his son [[family::Samuel Scattergood|Samuel]] (1646-96), who took over his father's prebends at [[location::Lichfield]] and [[location::Lincoln]], and added to it. After his death, the library was [[auction::auctioned]] in [[location of auction::London]], [[date of auction::26.7.1697]]. The catalogue (the British Library copy may be slightly imperfect?) contains 1864 lots, divided between [[language::Latin]] [[subject::theology]] (331 lots), [[language::Latin]] miscellaneous (1227), [[language::English]] [[subject::theology|divinity]] (89), [[language::English]] miscellaneous (153), [[language::Italian]] books (37), [[language::Spanish]] books (6), and [[language::French]] books (21). 

One of Scattergood's books has been identified in the Foyle Special Collections library at King’s College London: a copy of ''Dissertationum ludicrarum et amoenitatum scriptores varij'' (1638), which contains the armorial bookplate of the Trotter family, and an inscription on the front free endpaper, "Cost 10. d at Dr Scattergoods auction London aug. 1697”. This book is listed under the heading Libri Miscellanei in Duodecimo, &c. in the auction catalogue.
