====Biographical Note====
Third son of [[family::Walter Campbell]], capt. of Skipness, Argyll (1672-1753), he was probably educated at [[education::Glasgow University]]. He became a wealthy [[location::Glasgow]] [[occupation::merchant]], closely connected with the Duke of Argyll. He was a [[occupation::Member of Parliament|member]] of the Scottish Parliament (1702-1707) and of the British Parliament (1707-1708, 1716-1734). He had been a commissioner for the union of Scotland and England 1706. He built a house at Shawfield outside Glasgow which was demolished by rioters in 1725 and rebuilt with compensation moneys. He later sold it and purchased the island of [[location::Islay]], Argyll. By the end of his life he was Campbell of Ardentenie and Islay.
