====Biographical Note====
Born at [[place of birth::Cranborne, Dorset]]; son of [[family::Samuel Stillingfleet]]. Entered [[education::St John's College, Cambridge]] in 1649. Graduated BA and was made a [[occupation::fellow]] in 1653. Proceeded MA in 1656 and awarded DD in 1668. He became a [[occupation::preacher]] and [[occupation::lecturer]] at the [[organisations::Rolls Chapel]], and in 1672 a residentiary [[occupation::canon]] of [[organisations::St Paul's Cathedral|St Paul's]]. He was also a [[occupation::chaplain]] to the [[associates::Charles II|king]] and a [[occupation::canon]] of [[organisations::Canterbury Cathedral|Canterbury]]. Appointed [[occupation::archdeacon]] of [[location::London]] in 1677, [[occupation::dean]] of [[organisations::St Paul's Cathedral|St Paul's]] in 1678, and elected [[occupation::bishop]] of [[diocese::Worcester]] in 1689. Stillingfleet produced many theological treatises in defense of Anglican orthodoxy. By the time of his death, he was the leading theologian and apologist of the Church of England (ODNB). He was closely associated, in his thinking, with [[crossreference::Isaac Barrow]] and [[crossreference::John Tillotson]].

His library (ca.10000 volumes) was divided mainly between [[associates::Narcissus Marsh]], who bought the printed books for [[monetary value::£2500]] in 1705 (thus becoming one of the major components of [[organisations::Marsh's Library]] in [[location::Dublin]]), and [[crossreference::Sir Robert Harley]], who bought the [[format::manuscripts]] for [[monetary value::£175]] in 1707 (these, therefore, are now among the Harleian Manuscripts in the [[organisations::British Library]]).
