====Biographical Note====
Son of [[family::William Russell 1639-1683|William Russell]], 1st Baron Russell (executed in 1683 for involvement in the Rye House Plot); he inherited the title and estates of the Duke of Bedford from his grandfather, [[family::William Russell 1616-1700|William Russell]] in 1700. Matriculated at [[education::Magdalen College, Oxford]] in 1696, but did not graduate.  He held a number of court and local administrative posts before his early death from smallpox.

Russell used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 25699/*17); the extent and disposition of his library are not known.
